How to spend a weekend in the capital of Latvia? Looking for interesting places in Riga

More and more tourists fly to Europe with a transfer in Riga. However, don’t try to get to the final destination as soon as possible: if you have a chance, we recommend you take a day or two before starting a long trip.

We’ll tell you how to make days in Riga really memorable.

Day 1.

Check into a hotel and look around in the old town

The old town in Riga it’s a very cozy mix of cobbled streets, hotels, shops, and small toylike cafes. These bright houses will amuse any Instagrammer for at least a couple of hours. Photos can be taken absolutely free.

“Intrigue”, “Secret of the Riga Woman”, “Riga’s lilac” were the salvation of soviet fashionistas, who didn’t always can get french perfumes. It still can be found on Dzintars stores shelves, among other iconic (and new) fragrances.

Red Barns is a hipster quarter, where you can walk from the center of the old city. You will find here music festivals, parties and night movie screenings under the cold northern stars.

Try the local cuisine

After a long walk, you will have a good appetite and you can return to the city for dinner. Riga offers many options here:

Lido

A place where you can eat and not go broke: basically it’s a canteen, which is full of delicious homemade food. They offer traditional Latvian dishes – for example, buberte – a semolina dessert with cranberry sauce, as well you can eat here familiar fried potatoes.

Ezītis miglā

The name of the cafe is translated as “Hedgehog in the Fog”. It’s a small cozy bar with an extensive selection of alcohol, a fast-food snack and a bunch of stuff with hedgehogs.

Rozengrāls

Not just a restaurant, but a real costume show — Rozengrāls is a time-travel restaurant. The building itself has existed since 1293 when it was a wine cellar, and it still has several elements of the interior of that time. All the waiters are dressed in medieval outfits, the dishes are served according to old recipes, and musicians play folk melodies.

Day 2

Take a bike ride to Jurmala

What to do in Latvia in the summer? If the weather on the second day of your Riga vacation would be clear and warm, we recommend you spend the day in the fresh air. Moreover, for followers of a healthy life eating Riga prepared a surprise — bikeway to Jurmala. It’s a 13 kilometers of very picturesque places: the road, that past the Riga airport (you can make beautiful stories with airplanes), the botanical garden, a pine forest, and the seashore. And at the end of the journey, the prize is a resort Jurmala.

How to get there?
Bike rental points are near St. Peter’s Church in the old town. The bikeway itself begins in the Imanta area, across the river from the old city.

What to see in Oulu?

Oulu is a place characterized by technology, surrounded by nature. It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for a digital detox in the woods, going on a business trip, or just thinking where to go on a vacation in Oulu — you will find all the necessary options.

1. Look at the beautiful majestic animals

What to see in Finland first? Try to feel that you are in the fairytale of Hans Christian Andersen: dress warmly and go to one of the many farms that breed rein deers.
To be honest, this particular attraction is not located in the city itself, you need to drive about 40-50 minutes from Oulu. Nonetheless, you can always take advantage of the chauffeur service and drive where you want.

2. Spend an hour with the husky

Once again, we suggest going to a farm, but this time the husky farm. It’s a place where these animals are a real part of the family. Going here can be both a romantic pastime and a vivid impression for children.
Tours are available from January to April.

3. Look at the northern lights

What is the main attraction in Lapland? Of course, northern lights, but in the south of Finland, it can be observed only about 10-20 days a year. However, Oulu is in the northern part of the country and polar lights can be visible here from September to March.
We recommend using the services of professional guides, who know the most picturesque observation points.

4. Visit a crazy event (available only once a year)

If you are in Oulu in the summer, you should go to the imaginary guitar championship. Every August, since 1996, the most expressive masters of an invisible instrument compete in a fair fight.

5. Go to Tietomaa Science Centre with kids

The first science center in Finland with interactive exhibitions and open lectures for family.

2. Search for ghosts in the Hoia forest

The place is famous as the most haunted forest in the world. It is even called the “Hungarian Bermuda Triangle”.
There are legends about:

  • missing shepherd with 200 sheeps
  • a girl who was lost in the forest and emerged from it after 5 years, not remembering where she was
  • seeing of UFO

If the afterworld vibe is strange to you, then don’t forget that this is a place, that is perfect for taking a walk

3. Enjoy the best city view from Cetățuia Park

The overlook of the historical part of the city is amazing, but if you are not ready to walk upstairs, don’t go there.
On top of the hill is a place, where often held concerts.

4. Drink Romanian wine at Crama Noastra

Blood for vampires, wine for people. And you can find it in this excellent wine boutique, where staff will pick up wine for every taste, mood or zodiac sign. A wide selection of local drinks will delight people, who wish to bring home a couple of bottles to their collection.

5. Look to infinity and even further at the observatory

Put your childhood dream into reality and get closer to the stars thanks to the huge telescope.

On the negative side is that fact, that if you are an individual traveler, you have the opportunity to visit the observatory only on Friday evening. For groups of 15 people and more, visits are possible on other days.
